Mark Moffett did his doctorate under Edward O. Wilson on the marauder ant, an Asian ant species that he discovered behaves like an army ant in hunting on a massive scale, and has just finished a four year examination of army ants and other ants around the world for an upcoming book for the University of California Press.

As an ecologist, he has worked extensively on rainforest canopies, comparing their structure and organization to those of marine and microbial systems. Mark has also won leading awards in tropical exploration, writing, and photography, and is widely known for his articles in National Geographic Magazine, mostly on small creatures like ants, spiders, & frogs. He lectures widely, and has appeared on Conan O'Brien and the Colbert Report. Currently he has an exhibit on ants at the Smithsonian Institution.
